Quick Facts about Malta

The main island of Malta is the beating heart of the archipelago. It's where most of the action happens, from the lively streets of Valletta to the quieter fishing villages tucked into its coastline. History is never far away here. The island has been shaped by everyone from the Phoenicians to the Knights of St John, and their influence lingers in the architecture, food and traditions.

Malta is compact, so it's easy to travel between bustling towns, golden beaches and rocky headlands in a single day. You might spend the morning exploring prehistoric temples, the afternoon swimming in clear blue water and the evening enjoying a festa complete with fireworks. The seasons bring different charms. Summer is about sea breezes and long evenings outdoors, while winter offers cooler days perfect for walking.

Flora plays a big role in the island's charm. Spring covers the countryside with yellow crown daisies, poppies and wild gladiolus. In towns, bougainvillea, hibiscus and oleander bring bright bursts of colour against the limestone walls. Whether you're in a city square or a rural lane, there's always something blooming to catch the eye.
